Who hasn’t heard of Rihanna? Of course, she is one of the most famous pop singers these days! Rihanna is very fond of jewellery, she even has designed a few lines of her own! InStyle magazine wrote recently that “the singer always ‘shines bright like a diamond’ at formal events by making classics look cool and turning up in totally unexpected designs. The jewelry, InStyle noted, does not stop when Rihanna is off the red carpet in her T-shirts and jeans. Photographed on the red carpet at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, Rihanna wore several Hearts On Fire diamond bracelets.


Hope springs eternal

Ever thought of packing up and going to search for diamonds? Well, you can’t, unless, like Bobbie Oskarson of Longmont, Colorado, did in June 2015, you make your way to the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas. The park is the US’ and the world’s – only decommissioned diamond mine where visitors can search for diamonds and precious stones. It’s a major tourist attraction and worthwhile a visit, if it only was for the thrill of it – a chance to find a diamond or other gemstone! Bobby was a long way from home when she arrived at the park. And what a thrill it must have been when after only 30 minutes of fossicking, she found a clear, icicle-shaped, 8.52-carat diamond that she named the Esperanza.
According to the park’s website, Esperanza was found in a part of the park known as the “pig pen,” a 37-acre piece of ground known to be a sloppy, muddy mess after heavy rainfall. There was no rain in the pig pen that day. It was a hot, dry, summer day in southwest Arkansas. Bobby picked that location to dig because there was a giant banyan tree nearby to provide some shade from the blistering sun. The Esperanza is the fifth largest diamond found since the park opened in 1972.
Bobby and Esperanza quickly found their way to Neil Beaty, one of the top gemologists in the country and an Independent Certified Gemologist Appraiser with the American Gem Society (AGS). From the beginning, the plan was to sell it, and such a unique diamond required a unique plan.

A diamond dealer’s dream

In generations past, few diamond traders have gone out of their comfort zones of trading diamonds. For centuries, they have manufactured diamonds, trading diamonds among themselves and selling to jewellers. However, the American company Harry Kotlar is an interesting and inspiring exception. Today, six decades after its founding, the Harry Kotlar firm is not only recognized as a premier source for the high-quality diamonds, but also as a jeweller that decks out Hollywood stars with its jewellery. Now under the leadership of Harry Kotlar’s grandson David Weiner, the firm designs and produces diamond jewellery collections that evoke old-world artistry with modern sophistication. Carrie Underwood wore these Harry Kotlar diamond earrings at this year’s 52nd Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada.


Diving for diamonds

Some people will go deep to find diamonds. That is, deep under water! Scary, right? Stay dry and read it anyway…It’s a great story!
Some people seem to have the best jobs. One of them is Wynand Hendrikse, a diamond diver. When he is not in his studio in Stellenbosch, South Africa, with his wife, brother in law and staff making jewellery, he can found sailing off the western coast of South Africa, to a private offshore concession about an hour south of the border with Namibia. Accompanied by guests – a diving experience is a sine qua none – he dives into the shallow coastal waters to the sea floor looking for diamonds that are hidden in the rock bottom crevices. And on almost every dive he makes with his guests – who include sports stars and actors whose names he will keep from you - he will bring up sizable rough diamonds. Once the formalities have been involving his haul have been resolved with the authorities – it’s all legal and documented - he will take the stones back to his studio to be cut, polished and turned into bespoke pieces at his Stellenbosch design studio. Not a bad job, hey?

Wijnand knows the marine system called the Benguela Current well. The diamonds he finds ended up on the ocean floor after circulating through African waterways along various rivers and deltas. Once in the ocean, they encounter the rough Benguela waters, which can carry only the heaviest stones, which then at some pinot get stuck in the rocky bottom of the ocean floor where they end a journey that has taken millions of years. Pretty amazing.

The Jewellery Whisperer

In 2015, jewellery designer Tomoko Kodera was the first Japanese designer ever to win the prestigious International Jewellery Competition of the HRD AWARDS of HRD Antwerp. Passion.diamonds spoke with her.

What does jewellery mean to you?
To me, designing jewellery is a means to express my ideas and thoughts. When I make jewellery, my aim is to create a piece of art that you can wear. And that objective does not change when I work on commercially produced jewellery - the only difference being that I pay more attention to whether it’s easy and safe to wear!

Where do you get your inspiration?
I get inspired by watching and observing things around me. I conceived the idea for “Rice Husks” that won the grand prize of HRD Awards 2015 when I noticed the way rice husks ended up on your clothes. Whereas jewellery is something you wear by preference, rice husks – or hulls - stick to your clothing before you notice it. I was intrigued by that difference.

Why diamonds?
I have my own jewellery brand “Tomoko Kodera” in Japan. My favorite material is diamond, so I would call myself a diamond jewellery designer. Throughout my career, I have met many wonderful customers of a wide age range, from their twenties to their eighties. And despite the age differences, they all seem to have similar attitudes toward diamonds jewellery - and life. When they look at a piece of diamond jewellery, they are as pure as little girls!

You must some special stories to tell about your experiences with customers and their preferences”
One of my customers is a quite wealthy lady, but she had never been really interested in jewellery until she encountered my work. While she did own some jewellery pieces made by foreign luxury brands, she seldom wore them when etiquette required it, as she did not like to dress up ‘excessively.’
But one day, it must have been some eight years ago, she happened to see a collection of Tomoko Kodera jewellery in one of the major department stores in Japan. She bought a little finger ring on impulse. Later, she told me that this experience completely changed the way she looked at jewellery. Since then she has been buying and wearing only Tomoko Kodera!
And after we became personally acquainted, I designed a necklace for her, using a three-carat marquise-cut diamond. The process – the designing, fitting and finishing - took about a year and I enjoyed every minute of the time I shared with her! She often says to me: ‘Your jewellery is an integration of clean, colourless diamonds and delicately curved lines, and it fascinates me and empowers me!’



Imagine finding a (huge) diamond……

Imagine you were born in Botswana, in a small village in the Tswapong hills of Botswana’s Central district. Botswana - north of south Africa, with Namibia on its west side and bordered in the north and east by Zimbabwe and Zambia, is about the size of France and has about two million inhabitants. It’s a great country to go on a safari, its people are friendly and hospitable. The country also hides the world’s largest reserves of black coal, and yes, also diamonds, lots of diamonds.
And then imagine you have the luck of being born the grandson of a chief from Matlhakola village, growing up looking after the family’s substantial herd of cattle. You get to play soccer and chess with your friends, and enjoy a good schooling. Education is free in the country and because you have good grades, you end up studying geology at the University of Botswana. From there, it’s off to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Botswana’s capital Gaborone where you learn about the country’s most important product - diamonds. And then you get to work at the GIA lab in Gaborone. After a while the Karowe diamond mine hires you as a sorter of diamonds. Admittedly, a far cry from most of our readers’ own lives!

We just introduced you to Tiroyaone Mathaba, junior sorter, at the Karowe mine. So one morning, Tiroyaone was supervising the operation of the sophisticated Tomra XRT machines that had been installed just a few months earlier at the Karowe Diamond Mine to improve the rough diamond sorting process. The machine suddenly seemed to have trouble with material that was unusually cold and unyielding. His boss was off duty, so it was up to Tiroyaone to lool into it. “We were experiencing a near blockage, I was having to work quite hard to get the material down’, he says. Once the rocks had been transferred to the sort box and when Mathaba saw it contained a huge gem, he was stunned.

“At first I wanted to scream – then I said in a low hoarse voice, ‘G-d, it’s a diamond!’” His colleague reckoned it was 400 carats, but Tiroyaone thought it was bigger. His boss was called in to verify the find, then it was passed up the chain to the senior process engineer, process manager and geology department manager.

That’s how the Lesedi La Rona was found. The young sorter loves his job. “You never really expect rocks coming out like that. You get to see diamonds how nature made them – the octahedron shapes, the cubes – before humans touched them!” He’s confident that Lesedi La Rona and other huge recent finds at Karowe aren’t the end of the mine’s bounty!

Kate’s future goodies

We don’t care much any more about royals, do we? Nah. But when diamonds are mentioned in the same breath as the British royal family, we tend to take notice. No matter when it is a nostalgic documentary about Lady Di, or about William and Kate’s engagement, wedding, their own son George, or the Queen’s’90th birthday, be sure that some fantastic diamonds will come into view!

Some famous diamonds will be forever associated with the House of Windsor. Take the Cullinan diamond for instance. Mined in South Africa when it was still under British colonial rule, this huge, goose egg-sized rough diamond (3,106-carats!) was found sticking out of a tunnel’s wall of the underground Premier mine (still in operation!) in 1905. Gifted to King Edward VII, it was cut into nine separate stones and set in various of the royal jewels, including the Crown jewels. You can go and see - some of - them in the Tower of London!

Some of the famous diamond associated with the UK even succeed in making news headlines today. The Koh-i-Noor Diamond, that since long ‘resides’ in the United Kingdom, is the subject of a prolonged tug of war between India and the UK, the latter of which regards it as its property, while India, where it is first mentioned in written text just after 1300, wants it back. Originally weighing 793 carats, today it weighs in at 105 carats. The stone was presented to Queen Victoria in 1850.

When William finally will take finally on the British throne (No way Charles will ever get to be king!), Kate will have a ball choosing from all the goodies that are in the Windsor’s vaults. There she will find, among others, Queen Victoria's Fringe Brooch; the South African Diamonds, a necklace and bracelet set; The Australian Wattle Brooch, made of white and yellow diamonds; Queen Alexandra's Kokoshnik Tiara, a Russian style tiara composed of 488 diamonds and 61 platinum bars; the Queen's engagement ring and wedding gift bracelet; the Girls of Great Britain & Ireland Tiara; the Coronation Necklace; and the George IV State Diadem.

Most of the World Diamond Mark Services are free and you may use the Services without registering or submitting any personal information. Registration to World Diamond Mark Subscription Services enables you to access exclusive features.

You are responsible for protecting the confidentiality of personal information you provide upon subscription, such as your credentials for access (e.g., your username and password), credit card information, etc. and for complying with any guidelines that may be prescribed by World Diamond Mark from time to time to prevent unauthorized access to the Subscription Services.   1. Protection of Privacy
    • World Diamond Mark is committed to protecting the privacy of users of the Services in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. All information gathered from you in connection with your use of the Services is governed by World Diamond Mark , which is incorporated in these Terms of Use.
    • The Services are not specifically directed to children and World Diamond Mark does not solicit information from children. Children under the age of 13 must obtain permission from an adult holding parental responsibility over them, before submitting personal information or other data or materials to the Services.


  1. Limitation of Liability and Exclusion of Warranties
    • These terms of Use do not constitute any representation, warrantee, undertaking or condition on behalf of World Diamond Mark with respect to the Services. In particular, World Diamond Mark does not represent or warrant that:
      • Your and others' use of the Service will meet your requirements;
      • Your and others' use of the Service will be uninterrupted, timely, secure or free from errors;
      • Defects in the operation or functionality of the Services will be corrected.
    • In no event shall World Diamond Mark, its directors, officers, shareholders, parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, agents and licensors, or providers be liable for any indirect, special, incidental, punitive, or consequential damages arising out of or related to the use, inability to use, performance or nonperformance of the Services, even if World Diamond Mark was previously advised of the possibility of such damages and regardless of whether such damages arise in contract, tort, unjust enrichment laws, under statute, in equity, at law, or otherwise.


  1. Indemnification
    • To the fullest extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold World Diamond Mark, its directors, officers, shareholders, parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, agents, and licensors harmless from and against all losses, expenses, damages, and costs, including reasonable attorneys' fees, arising out of (i) your violation of third party's intellectual property rights, or the privacy or publicity rights of others, (ii) your use or unauthorized copying of the Services or the Content, or (iii) your violation of these Terms of Use or any applicable laws or regulations.



  1. Enforcement, Jurisdiction and venue
    • No waiver. You expressly agree that World Diamond Mark's failure or choice not to exercise or enforce any legal right or remedy which is granted to it under these Terms of Use or by operation of any applicable law, rule, regulation or statute; shall not be construed as a waiver of World Diamond Mark's rights and entitlements to remedies and shall not be construed as release or discharge to you or to third parties acting for you or on your behalf, from your undertakings and obligations under these Terms of Use.
    • These Terms of Use shall be governed by and construed in accordance the laws of England, excluding its choice of- law principles. You hereby agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of England to review any legal dispute or claim arising from your use of the Services or from these Terms of Use or the breach thereof.
    • Class action waiver. Any proceedings to resolve or litigate any dispute will be conducted solely on an individual basis. You may not seek to have any dispute heard as a class action, or join in a class action or in any other proceeding in which either party acts or proposes to act in a representative capacity. No proceeding will be combined with another without the prior written consent of all parties to all affected proceedings.
    • Limitation. To the extent permitted by law, any claim or dispute you initiate must be filed within three years. The three -years period begins when a cause of action forms. If a lawsuit is not filed within three years, it shall be permanently barred.
    • Not Advice. Information contained in the Services is not intended to be professional or scientific advice or recommendation and should not be considered as such, nor is it intended to replace consultation with a qualified professional in the pertinent field.
    • Severability. If any provision of these Terms of Use shall be unlawful, void or for any reason unenforceable, then that provision shall be deemed severable from these Terms of Use and shall not affect the validity and enforceability of any remaining provisions.
    • Survival. The provisions of these Terms of Use which by their nature should survive the termination of these Terms of Use and your use of the Services, shall survive such termination.


  1. Subscription Services.
    • Some of the Services may be available only by subscription, (the "Subscription Services"). Some of the Subscription Services may be provided for payment ("Subscription Fees"). Your right to use the Subscription Services for which you have subscribed is personal to you or members of your immediate family residing with you.  
    • You are responsible for protecting the confidentiality of your credentials for access to the Subscription Services (e.g., your username and password). You agree to immediately notify World Diamond Mark of any unauthorized use of your password or any other breach of security. World Diamond Mark reserves the right to perform encryption of passwords for account maintenance purposes.
    • Subscription Fees and Changes. Charge of Subscription Fees begins on the date your Services subscription is activated or, if applicable, on the date your free trial period ends, and will be periodically billed to your credit or charge card thereafter. You acknowledge and agree that you will not receive a printed bill in the mail for your Subscription Fees. World Diamond Mark reserves the right to increase the rates of Subscription Fees at any time, but not before the end of your subscription term. Increases in subscription rates will apply to existing accounts at the time of their renewal and will not exceed the standard subscription rate at the time of renewal. Periodic discounts in subscription rates will not necessarily be reflected in your renewal or on-going subscription rates. Customers subscribing at specially discounted promotional rates may be subject to varying rate increases, none of which shall exceed the standard posted subscription rate.
    • Termination of Subscription and Free Trial. You may terminate your subscription at any time by providing notice of termination to World Diamond Mark. In the event of termination of your subscription, you shall have no claims or cause of action against World Diamond Mark, its officers, directors, employees, or its affiliates. Termination of your subscriptions or free trial automatically terminates your license to use the Subscription Services and any Content or other material contained therein.
    • Renewals and Cancellations. YOUR SUBSCRIPTION WILL RENEW AUTOMATICALLY AND WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE TO YOU, unless World Diamond Mark terminates it for any reason or you notify World Diamond Mark by email (receipt of which must be confirmed by email reply from World Diamond Mark) of your decision to cancel or terminate your subscription. You must cancel your subscription before the renewal date in order to avoid billing of Subscription Fees for the renewal term to your credit card.
    • If you terminate or cancel your subscription within 30 days of the date of activation or renewal of your Account and before you entered the "Subscription Services", you are eligible to receive a refund of the full annual Subscription Fees paid to World Diamond Mark. IF YOU TERMINATE YOUR SUBSCRIPTION AFTER THE 30 DAYS PERIOD OF ACTIVATION OR RENEWAL OR IF YOU USE THE "SUBSCRIPTION SERVICES" WITHIN THAT TERM, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY REFUND OF THE ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION FEE PAID TO WORLD DIAMOND MARK.
    • In the event that you cancel or terminate your subscription, unless otherwise required by law, Subscription Fees will not be refunded, applied to another subscription, or transferred to anyone else and are not convertible to cash or other form of credit.
    • Credit Cards or Charge Cards. You agree that you will provide a credit or charge card that World Diamond Mark may charge for all subscription fees or other amounts payable to World Diamond Mark. With respect to such charges, you give the following authorization:

I authorize automatic credit or charge card billing by World Diamond Mark. I agree that the charges described above will be billed by World Diamond Mark to the credit or charge card that I have provided to World Diamond Mark in my Account information, or otherwise when I applied for the Subscription Services. I understand that all fees and charges may be nonrefundable. I agree that World Diamond Mark will not be responsible for any expenses that I may incur resulting from overdrawing my bank account or exceeding my credit limit as a result of an automatic charge made under this Agreement.

  • Account and Billing Information. You agree to provide current, complete, and accurate information for your Account in order to receive access to the Subscription Services. You agree to promptly update all account information to keep your account current, complete, and accurate in case of a change, and you must promptly notify World Diamond Mark if your credit or charge card is cancelled or if you become aware of a potential breach of security. If you fail to provide World Diamond Mark of the foregoing information, you agree that World Diamond Mark may assume that your credit or charge card is either still valid or that it has been renewed and may continue charging you for the Subscription Services to which you have subscribed, unless you have cancelled your subscription.




  1. Users Generated Content.


  • World Diamond Mark welcomes you to share information, views, insights, experiences and discoveries relating to the world of diamonds, gems and jewelry, by submitting video clips, comments, illustrations, text and stories ("User Content") to the Services.
  • World Diamond Mark does not represent and does not warrant that your User Content will be published or displayed on the Services. World Diamond Mark retains the right to publish, maintain, remove, rank, and/or position your User Content at its sole discretion.
  • You acknowledge that you understand and agree that whether or not your User Content is published, World Diamond Mark does not guarantee any confidentiality with respect to the User Content. Your User Content may not be submitted anonymously or incognito and therefore, any User Content submitted by you may be associated with you.
  • By submitting User Content, you grant World Diamond Mark an unlimited irrevocable perpetual license that is not limited in term, to use the User Content, which use includes but is not limited to copy, reproduce, distribute, display, make available to the public, broadcast, transmit, publically perform, translate and prepare derivative works of (and to use and exploit such derivative works in any manner), in any medium or formats and through any media channels ("User License"). The User License granted by you in connection with textual comments, talkbacks and reviews you submit is perpetual and irrevocable.
  • By submitting User Content, you further grant to each user of the Services, a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license that is not limited in term, to access your User Content through the Services, and to share, distribute, transmit, recommend, like, comment, or otherwise react to such User Content, to the extent afforded by the functionality embedded in the Services. Same restrictions apply to you when you access other users' User Content.
  • You acknowledge that you understand and agree that the sole responsibility for any damage that may be caused by your User Content, to yourself or to third parties, lies with you. You alone shall bear the consequences of submitting, posting or publishing the User Content. World Diamond Mark does not endorse any User Content or any opinion, recommendation, or advice expressed therein, and World Diamond Mark expressly disclaims any and all liability in connection with your User Content.
  • You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights, consents, and permissions which are required to enable World Diamond Mark to publish, broadcast and make available the User Content. Specifically, if you include images, pictures or photos of other people in your User Content, you warrant and represent that you obtained the consent and approval of such people to the use (including parents and/or guardians' approval).
  • You warrant and represent that: (i) you are legally entitled to post the User Content and to grant World Diamond Mark the User License ;(ii) you are the author and sole owner of and/or hold all rights in and to the User Content; (iii) there are no restrictions or limitations which prevent you from granting the User Licenses herein; (iv) the User Content is original and does not infringe upon any third party's rights (including copyrights, rights of privacy or rights of publicity, trademarks or trade secrets), unless you have a formal license or adequate permission from the rightful owner or licensee to use the material.
  • You further warrant and represent that the Content will not: (i) contain any information that you are aware or suspect that is inaccurate, harmful, dangerous or unreliable in any manner; (ii) facilitate or promote illegal activity, or contain content that is illegal; (iii) contain content that is defamatory, misleading, fraudulent, obscene, distasteful, racially or ethnically offensive, harassing, abusing, or that is discriminatory based upon race, gender, color, creed, age, sexual orientation, or disability; (iv) contain sexually suggestive, offensive or explicit wording; (v) contain any virus, worms, Trojan horses, spyware or any other malware and other disabling or damaging codes; (vi) contain third party's trade secrets; or (vii) otherwise contain content that violates any laws, rules, regulations or policies of any competent jurisdiction.
  • World Diamond Mark is a non-for-profit organization. Accordingly, you acknowledge and undertake not to submit User Content which is intended for business promotion, PR, or advertising purposes per-se and that your User Content will not contain adware. While recommendations and reviews relating to the purposes of World Diamond Mark venture are permitted, you warrant and represent that the User Content will not mainly promote any business, product or service, as such. You further agree that you will not exploit the Service for solicitation of business or any other commercial use.
  • You agree to cooperate, defend, indemnify and hold harmless World Diamond Mark and its officers, directors, employees, shareholders, customers, agents, successors and assigns from and against any and all loss, damage, settlement or expense (including reasonable legal expenses) from and against any claim arising from breach of your representations and warranties set forth in these Terms.
  • In case of violation of your above obligations and for any reason which World Diamond Mark deems appropriate, World Diamond Mark reserves the right (but shall have no obligation) not to publish and/or to remove your User Content from the Website. If such violations are excessive or repetitive, World Diamond Mark may terminate your access to the Services at any time, without prior notice and at its sole discretion.
  • If you wish to remove User Content from the Services and to terminate the User License, you may do so by notifying World Diamond Mark at any time in writing, to

  • Removal of User Content and termination of the User License and License set forth herewith shall be subject to the following:
    • The User License with respect to the rights to publically perform, prepare derivative works and translate, shall not terminate and shall endure the removal of the User Content from the Services, if World Diamond Mark and/or World Diamond Mark's licensee has commenced substantial preparations and/or bore expenses in exercising the User License in connection with your User Content.
    • World Diamond Mark's obligation to remove User Content shall apply to the Services only and shall not span to any other website, social network, or and other media channels to which the User Content has been copied, uploaded, distributed or transmitted as provided by the User License, prior to the processing of your request to remove the User Content.
